election day cupcake toppers

OK, so not exactly cookies, but these election day cupcake toppers are still in the realm of baking and sweetness.

you will need:
red, white and blue craft felt
scissors
tracing paper

pencil

fusible webbing (I use "
lite steam-a-steam 2")
fabric glue

lollipop sticks
iron and ironing board

cupcakes, of course

All of the above should be available from any craft store. You can also check online. I've bought felt here. And the webbing and fabric glue here. But a quick google search will reveal many other options. As for the lollipop sticks, I broke mine to about 4 inches. Customize to your cupcakes. You want the cupcake height plus about 1 1/2 inches.)

Step One: cut your felt pieces
For each star and circle you will need 3 felt pieces: 1 large, 1 medium and 1 small in red, white and blue (mix and match the sizes and colors). Draw the shapes on a piece of tracing paper. My largest is in the 2-3 inch range. I traced cookie cutters, but you can draw the stars by hand or use different circles from around the house (cans, quarters, etc.). Hold the paper against the felt and cut out your shapes. Save the tracing paper template for the large circle/star. I ended up just cutting out the smallest star and circle by hand because it was easier than tracing. Gee, can you tell I cut out that tiny star with no guidance?

Step Two: assemble, fuse and glue your toppers
Take the middle star or circle and hold against the sticky side of a sheet of fusible webbing. Cut out the webbing the same size as the medium star/circle. Peel off the back of the webbing and press medium star/circle onto center of large star/circle. Refer to the directions on the webbing, but I use a DRY iron on medium setting to fuse the circles. Hold iron over the back of the shape for 5-10 seconds, careful not to burn anything.

To attach the smallest shape, I just used a dab of fabric glue. This is your topper front.

Step Three: add the stick
Using the original tracing paper shapes, cut out another large star or circle from felt the same colors as the largest star/circle from your topper fronts. (In theory, you could've just cut out a couple pieces in Step One, but I find the more you cut out the more things shift.) Press the stick side of fusible webbing onto the star/circle and cut out webbing. Set aside.

Place a lollipop stick on the back of your topper front with a dab of glue.

Press the topper back with the webbing side against the back of the topper front and iron to fuse as you did in Step Two.

Step Four: insert into cupcakes
This step is pretty self explanatory. Just insert into the cupcake and you're ready to go!
